The reality is this: There are no mobile apps that are particularly effective for learning Spanish for English speakers. The fundamental parts of learning a language are listening, reading, writing and talking. Almost all the applications on the market right now realistically focus only on reading, and to a much lesser degree writing.
Most of the applications on the market use computer generated voices, or very short sentences with the intention that you either repeat back what you heard through writing it out or by repeating it back through translating it. This isn't particularly effective way to learn to listen. People do not talk in short sentences, with communication including only you repeating back what they said. "Tengo hambre." "I am hungry." This is just not natural. Go to McDonalds, when asked for your order, listen to what the person says, and repeat back what the person at McDonalds said to you as your order. You're not going to get your food, and these programs lack the ability for you to develop natural responses.
These apps do a poor job at catering towards oral and kinetic learners, and to a certain degree, they do a poor job with visual learners too.
I'll repeat: No apps are good for learning Spanish. Apps are good for compliment to other methods and tools where the focus is on communication through reading, writing, listening and speaking. This includes immersion, classroom methods, workbooking, etc. Apps are primarily good for passive vocabulary building and retention. If you're desperate for something that does that, I would first recommend Memrise and Lingopedia, Spanish Verb Conjugation Trainer by Qué Onda, DRAE Diccionario de la Lengua Española and then Duolingo.
