Top 5 Android apps for learning Spanish

We previously presented to you our OpenLanguage top 5 iOS apps for learning Spanish. Today is all about Android! So get ready, my fellow readers, because here is our top 5 Android apps for Learning Spanish!

¡Comencemos! (Let's begin!)

1.- Spanish Class Demo, by Ceardannan (Free)

Going to class is probably one of the best ways to study a language, but what if I told you that you could do this without actually getting into a classroom? Spanish Class Demo offers the user a simulation of an actual Spanish language class. It not only includes the most basic and common words, but also grammar, gerunds, verb tenses, participles and useful phrases. Every single lesson contains both audio and written content, enough to get you started. The interface is simple, self-explanatory, and clean.

In my opinion, this app offers more than enough to be a demo, but let's face it, the "free part" only includes 300 words and 30 phrases which is more than enough to get you hooked on. The good thing is that the price for the complete version is less than $4 bucks, which makes it reasonable, unless you're in the mood for a burrito, then you would seriously have to think about where to spend your money. Choose wisely!

2.-Learn Spanish with Pictures, Zoltan Magyar (Free).

"One image says more than 1000 words", right? Yes, it is true! Image relation is one of the most effective ways of learning a new language. If I was to show you a picture of that clear bottle beer from Mexico that is always served with a lemon, I know you'd be able to recognize it, name, taste, and every other piece of information stored in your brain. This application turns images into more than a resource for studying. It uses them to make learning FUN! With more than 200 words in 10 different topics, Learn Spanish with Pictures will help you memorize and practice the names of things and places you use and see every day, no matter where you are.

It is a very user friendly application. There is really no need for an explanation because the idea is very simple, you just need to guess the name of the thing or place you see in the picture. It's free, so I wouldn't complain at all, and once you get used to it, it's actually pretty fun!

3.-Spanish Translator, by Pleng Apps (Free)

Translators have made our lives easier. I'm not talking about a person you hire (probably for a lot of money) only to translate for an hour or two, I'm talking about electronic translators. Spanish Translator helps you, in a  very easy and simple way, to translate not only words, but also complete sentences.

The problem with this app is that after translating, it gives you a number of possible words. It might be a big issue at first, but later on you'll discover that many words in English can have multiple uses and meanings in Spanish. I found it useful because it doesn't stick to the formal-dictionary meaning of the word, it also offers slang translation. Besides, you can share your knowledge with your friends and/or friends of friends through a Facebook post, email or private message. A very useful option if you want to rub your progress in someone's face.

4.-Spanish Word of the Day, by Declan Software (Free)

I used to have one of those "word of the day" calendars back in high school. I thought it might be a smart way to increase my vocabulary. The only problem is that I started speaking like someone from the Victorian era, which wasn't a big hit with the ladies. With Spanish word of the day you won't have my same problem. This app's vocabulary is very neutral and used on daily basis. It even offers some slang.

Again, another free app. This application is useful if you have any Spanish-speaking friends because it lets you impress them with words every single day. Every words has its pronunciation recorded by native speakers and written with a basic example. Not a bad deal at all.

5.- Open Language, by Open Language   (Free)

The "Tablet Textbook", created by OpenLanguage fully catches the user's attention and doesn't let it go. Friendly, easy to use, interactive, learning by yourself is a whole new experience. With both, audio and visual aids, this app provides a curriculum designed by scholars, experts in teaching Spanish as a foreign language.

Interactive is the word to describe this app. Every lesson offers the user the option to track their progress, listen to recordings, review, and learn expressions, words, and even culture of the different Spanish-speaking countries in the planet. I would say it's a little pricey for what it really is, but the method works, it really does. The sentence by sentence, word by word recordings makes everything so easy, but also a little monotonous at times. $30 bucks for a month and $240 for a year is really worth it if your intentions are to study Spanish in a more formal way, instead of just trying to learn pick-up lines to use at the mexican party next friday.

Here you have the tools to study Spanish, the rest is up to you. With determination, you'll be able to master this language. And who knows, maybe you'll be the big star in a mexican soap opera someday!

Cheers!
